Since 1996, the Walker Methodist Foundation and TRUST (an ecumenical coalition of congregations serving South Minneapolis) have provided a Parish Nurse Program in South Minneapolis. Through the years, this program has provided countless individuals with parish nursing care, flu shot clinics, and health education offerings.
A parish nurse functions within a congregation and is a medical and spiritual resource for health and wholeness. The TRUST Parish Nurse program serves 18 congregations and the community. As a missional outreach, it provides services free of charge to clients who do not have the resources to receive one-on-one home contact.
Through home visits, the parish nurse saves medical costs by recognizing serious symptoms, averting hospitalization, sustaining independence and care giving, increasing understanding of medical issues, and providing advocacy for those unable to speak for themselves.
